With applications to join the second cohort now open, the first week of Teach For Qatar’s recruitment roadshow saw more than 300 university students register their interest to apply for the 2015 – 2017 Fellowship.
As Teach For Qatar advances its search for graduates and young professionals across Doha, university students will continue to be invited to attend information sessions hosted on their respective campuses.
“We have so far seen positive interest from students at Qatar University, Texas A&M University and Georgetown, who were eager to learn more about Teach For Qatar’s mission and how to join,” said Habes Howail, Teach For Qatar’s Head of Outreach and External Relations. “As students continue to spread the word about us on social media, it is also very encouraging to witness an increased interest from males exploring the option of joining our Fellowship this year.”
With applications for the 2015-2017 Fellowship closing at the start of April, Teach For Qatar will continue to promote its two-year teaching and leadership development program through the ongoing university roadshow.
“I want to learn about Teach For Qatar and how to join, because it is an organization that will allow me to help build the future of my country, which is something I wish to do since Qatar has given me so much,” said Reem Al Ali, who is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations at Qatar University.
Additionally, recent graduates and young professionals, whether nationals or residents, are encouraged to apply to Teach For Qatar for a chance to develop their leadership skills through a teaching placement at one of its partner independent schools.
Founded by Her Excellency Sheikha Hind bint Hamad Al-Thani, Teach For Qatar is a local non-governmental organization (NGO) working to help solve the challenges Qatar’s students face, by reinvesting exceptionally talented leaders into the independent school system.
Teach For Qatar is actively seeking to address the value of teaching and its important role in realizing the Human Development Pillar of the Qatar National Vision 2030. It does this by providing its Fellows with the opportunity to guide and inspire the country’s future leaders inside the classroom.
Applicants that meet the requirements will be shortlisted for interview and then invited to an assessment day. If successful, they will go on to receive intensive training at Teach For Qatar’s Summer Institute in June, before they embark on their journey at one of Doha’s independent schools from September 2015.
The Teach For Qatar Fellowship is designed to positively impact students in Qatar, and by working with its partner schools, Teach For Qatar has identified English, Mathematics and Science as high priority subjects. The second cohort of Fellows, like the first - who began their placements in September this year - will teach those subjects to the 7th and 8th grade.
Additionally, Teach For Qatar has also established strategic partnerships with several reputable companies in Qatar. Through which a number of employees are being encouraged to undertake a two-year secondment with Teach For Qatar, to work as teachers in independent schools.
The secondment initiative falls within each organization’s Corporate Social Responsibility division, and provides employees the opportunity to give back to society and grow their employees’ leadership skills. Additionally, employees may resume their positions at their respective companies at the end of their Fellowship if they choose to do so.
Meanwhile, the Teach For Qatar model is guided by the successes of Teach For All, an international network supporting organizations in 35 countries. As a member of Teach For All, Teach For Qatar has access to more than 20 years of research on training, recruitment, and leadership development that is tailored to Qatar’s unique context.
